I don't think Rival Hearts will be happening after you're married. I mean, I think you have to go through ALL heart events with the girls. After you got married and if you're in your fourth year, they will be married. Well I'm not sure if I'm even right. Just a guess.

Just visit him and give him stuff daily. Eventually his speech will change - when he starts saying different things, then you know you're becoming better friends with him.
Rival events do happen even after you get married. Read about Cliff & Rick. Basically, you need to show up at the right moment and give these 2 stuff everyday to be better friends. Rick likes chicken feed and Cliff likes cooked foods like miso soup. Good luck
Yes, Rick likes chicken feed, but I guess he doesn't eat it, he feeds it to the chickens. You can also use chicken feed to burn food for the Elli Leaves recipe. Lilia likes chocolate.
