Yes, it's very useful. It's on level 255 in the spring mine, beginning on Spring 1 of your 3rd year.

The best thing to bring is Elli Leaves, or, failing that, Bodigizer or Turbojolt. The Elli Leaves are pretty complicated to make. See this page:

The Gem of the Goddess recovers stamina, the Gem of the Kappa reduces fatigue. They wouldn't work in the mine though, because time has to pass - they only work after one hour, and time passes very slowly in the mines.

No it does, but extremely slowly, and only when you pass from one level to the next. It'll take about 2 game-hours to go to the very bottom of the mine.

I went in at 2:00 exactly and either left at 5:00 or 6:00 - I don't remember which (it was probably some time in between).

The map comes up and you can only go to a place on the map with a specific name. For instance, you move the cursor over the church, and it says, "Church." Then if you press "A" you'll instantly appear outside the church door. But if you pick a random spot on the path in front of the supermarket or the hospital, and press "A," it will just put you at the loading point for the north side of Mineral Town, which isn't very close.
