1. More interesting characters... The characters just seem so boring in this game compared to most of the Harvest Moon series. At least give them some more lines!
2. A use for monsters. The monster battle system is just... Ugh... It really doesn't do anything for you to take a tame monster along with you. They aren't useful at all. There's really no point.
3. Having to actually take care of monsters. You really don't even have to feed them in this game. In the rest of the Harvest Moon series the animals get mad at you if you don't feed them so you actually care about them. In this game I just don't feel anything but apathy for my monsters...
4. No more caves you can only enter at certain times of year. It works for a cave with mining only but when it means having to wait a whole year to progress the storyline and such you get bored with the game pretty quick. There really isn't all that much to do.
5. Events! Heart events and all the random events are some of the best part of Harvest Moon. Rune Factory feels kind of incomplete without them.

I like Rune Factory and all, but I really wish the farming parts were a little harder and the characters had a little more personality. It feels like too much was focused on the storyline and the dungeons and there's not much left for everything else. I really hope that Rune Factory 2 ends up being an improvement. But, even if it isn't, I'll probably get it. Rune Factory is a fun game, it just doesn't have the replay value that traditional Harvest Moons do.
