Matthew

screenshot

Matthew is a reserved but hardworking fellow who lives with his sister Vesta on her farm in Forgotten Valley. He has a stern tone and can sometimes come across as unfriendly, but that's not entirely the case. Matthew pushes people away due to his low self-esteem and frustration relating to his health. He used to live in the city, but the lifestyle there was detrimental to his well-being. Eventually, he moved from city life to a quieter and calmer environment at his big sister's vegetable farm. While the slower pace is refreshing, his physical condition has been slow to recover. This ongoing annoyance with his situation tends to make Matthew unsociable.

When you marry Matthew, he will continue to work at Vesta's farm.

Matthew's English name in the Gamecube game is Marlin, but XSeed decided to change the character's name to Matthew to match his Japanese name better, Masshu.

Gift Preferences

As he's somewhat unwell, Matthew likes the health potions from Van's shop (Energy Drink, Power Drink, and Hyber Drink). He also likes Curry, Hot Curry, and Mushroom Curry (I enjoy super-spicy curry when I feel a cold starting to take hold, so it makes sense why Matthew would like it too). Herbal Soup is also a good gift, which only requries an Aromatic Herb to cook.

Besides cooked dishes, I find that Matthew is perfect fine with receiving Milk and Apples. He'll even commment the next day about the delicious Apple.

Introduction

You'll hear someone calling you over as you walk by. Vesta asks how you're doing with your farm work, and if you ever need any help with the farm, you can rely on her and her little brother, Matthew. Vesta directs you to where Matthew is working in the field and calls out to him. Matthew is not happy with being disturbed, but his sister insists that he come over.

Once he arrives, Vesta asks if he would be willing to get involved if you ever needed help. You're new to the valley, and while your presence has brought a little bit more liveliness to the area, it would be unpleasant if you ended up leaving because you had nobody to rely on. Matthew doesn't wholly agree with his sister's opinion, but before things get too confrontational, Vesta remembers that she has other business to attend to. She apologizes for having to run out in the middle of the conversation, but Matthew can answer any questions that you have.

Matthew is annoyed at Vesta for leaving him alone with you. It seems he isn't one for words, as he stands there for a while. Eventually, Matthew asks if there is anything wrong with your crops. When you confirm that all's well, he pauses before explaining that he will return to work now. Then he runs off.

2-Heart Event

screenshot

After you enter the house, Matthew tries to start some small talk but eventually gives up and abruptly asks if there's something you want.

Option 1A: What do you like to do in your free time?

Nothing extraordinary, he replies. Matthew does enjoy spending time at the Blue Bird Cafe. He seems to be more comfortable with conversation and asks if you like vegetables.

Option 2A: Can't get enough of 'em!

Matthew says he likes them too! He eats many vegetables, though he's noticed that people don't eat enough veggies nowadays. Matthew warns that it's easy to skip eating vegetables when living alone. He remembers that Vesta had talked about this before, but let him know if you need any help growing veggies.

Option 3A: You're so nice! Thank you. (+10 affection with Matthew)

Matthew is a bit embarrassed with your response, but he's not mad at you or anything like that. He doesn't know how to respond to compliments. He invites you to come and visit anytime you want.

Option 3B: I'm on top of it (-5 affection with Matthew)

Is that so... Guess he's not much help after all.

Option 2B: They're kinda gross. (-5 affection with Matthew)

Matthew is in shock! What?! You quickly exit the house.

Option 1B: I'm busy right now, actually. (-5 affection with Matthew)

Ok, he understands. Farming can be a busy task.

4-Heart Event

You see Matthew outside by the fields. He was lost in thought. When asked what he was thinking about, Matthew guesses you want to avoid hearing about it.

Option 1A: Please?

What?! Matthew assumes you want to make fun of him.

Option 2A: I won't! I promise!

Okay, but don't tell anyone else. Yesterday while on the farm, he thought he saw Cecilia called to him from the other side of the field. When she ran closer, she transformed into Vesta! The whole thing was a weird dream. Matthew is bothered about it but shakes it off and wonders if worrying about a dream is silly.

Option 3A: Not at all. (+10 affection with Matthew)

... really? Matthew is relieved. He didn't expect you to respond in that way. You're a kind person! As a token of his appreciation, Matthew gives you a Vegetable Juice.

Option 3B: HA HA HA HA HA HA (-5 affection with Matthew)

See, it was a bad idea to tell you about it! Matthew walks away.

Option 2B: Oh, come on, just tell me (-5 affection with Matthew)

Why would you say that?! He has nothing to say to someone like you. Matthew walks away.

Option 1B: Fine then. I'm leaving (-5 affection with Matthew)

You're right. It's probably not necessary to bother you over such things.

6-Heart Event

Cecilia notices you walking by and calls out to greet you. Matthew acknowledges you too. Suddenly Cecilia doesn't look so well! Since she doesn't want anyone to worry, Cecilia says she will rest for a while. Though she apologizes for leaving, she also asks that you chat with Matthew for a little bit.

Matthew is a little for conversation initially, but then he asks if you'd like to chat.

Option 1A: Sure!

Matthew admits he isn't this chatty with everyone, but he's more open to talking because you're different. He starts by asking how you like it here in the valley.

Option 2A: You bet! (+10 affection with Matthew)

Matthew is glad to hear you're doing well. He's been doing good, taking each day one at a time. When he first arrived in the valley, Matthew was a little worried. He turns to look at the stream and sees a fish! Do you go fishing? Maybe you could catch it. You smile back at him, which makes him nervous. Matthew abruptly tells you he's going home.

Option 2B: Not so good, actually. (-5 affection with Matthew)

It may be tough, but you can do it. Anyhow, if you had the time to talk with him, then you've time to work on your farm. Matthew scampers off to go check up on how Cecilia is doing.

Option 1B: No thanks. (-5 affection with Matthew)

He's fine with this, too. Matthew says he's going to check on Cecilia and then runs off.

8-Heart Event

screenshot

You see Matthew standing by himself out by the windmills. He isn't in the mood for a conversation and asks that you leave him alone.

Option 1A: What happened?

Matthew has been thinking about his past. His health prevented him from holding a job in the city. It has been several years since moving here, but his health still hasn't improved. The doctor told him that his recovery is based on his attitude, but Matthew believes he may be like this for the rest of his life.

Option 2A: No, you won't. You'll get better!

Matthew scoffs at your support. What do you know?! You don't understand what he's going through. He demands that you leave him alone.

Option 3A: No, I'm staying right here. (+10 affection with Matthew)

Matthew comes to his sense. He pauses before telling you that he's going home. Before he walks through the door, he turns around and thanks you.

Option 3B: Fine. Bye, then.

You turn around and walk away.

Option 2B: Yeah, maybe. (-5 affection with Matthew)

Matthew asks that you leave him alone.

Option 1B: Okay, okay! I'll leave.

You turn around and walk away.

Proposal Event

screenshot

Matthew takes you outside the farm area, where you give him the Blue Feather. He accepts your gift and tells you he intends to continue working on his sister's farm. Up until now, you've done well on your own. Now, he'll be there to take care of things, too!

Engagement Event

screenshot

Matthew asks if you have time to walk with him. As you are chatting, you see a distressed Gary in the distance. The older man had been carrying a heavy bag and dropped it on the ground. You and Matthew run up to him, offering to help Gary the rest of the way. Matthew watches you help Gary but doesn't interact.

The two of you continue walking, but again you see trouble. Hugh is upset and needs some comfort. You give Hugh some advice, which cheers him up. Matthew watches you help. Hugh happily runs off, and you continue the walk.

At the beach, you both listen to the waves. Matthew suggests that you walk along the shore. It's slippery, so Matthew asks you to carefully watch where you're stepping. Moments later, Matthew finds himself on the ground! He wasn't paying attention and tripped. Embarrassed, Matthew gets up and admits he was distracted. Matthew was thinking about how he always assumed that only important people were meant to be protected. But from watching you help everyone today, now Matthew also wants to help and protect you. Perhaps protecting someone isn't one-sided. Matthew feels that you shouldn't be behind in the shadows; you should be side-by-side, supporting each other.

Option 1A: Sounds like a plan! or Option 1B: I'll support you, too!

Regardless of your response, Matthew is happy. He suggests that the two of you walk a little more before he heads home.
