Terranigma - Destiny of the Hero
by Panthees
Prologue - The Awakening
Something wonderful was about to happen.
-=This fanfic is already going to end? Cool!
A voice. A voice was calling its name, but the words meant nothing to him.
-=Oh sure… words never mean anything…
Slowly, he opened his eyes. A multitude of colours poured into his vision,
-=The he realised he had kaleidoscopes on his eyes
they were new and exciting, more beautiful than he could ever have dreamt of. He tried to speak, but the deep sleep had made him forget how.
-=Yeah, each morning I also have trouble speaking after waking up…
It was then that realisation started to flood back into him.
-=He then drowned in the flood and died. The end
"Yo...
-=…Sup?
mi." He rolled the word off his tongue. He knew the word well, it was his own name.
-=Yomi’s the hero of this ‘fic? Things are looking up!
Good. At least he was starting to remember something.
-=He remembered where he left his keys
The blur of colours started to sharpen, and soon they were back to normal.
-=The colors are normal?
Yomi looked up, his sight acknowledging the huge entitiy that was talking to him.
-=It was the Pillsbury Dough Boy!
"Hello, Yomi," it said, "I have woken you from your deep sleep, your help is required once more."
-=Did Yomi even do much to help in Terranigma except naviguate the box anyway?
All traces of the panic that Yomi had felt earlier
-=What traces of panic? All he did was stare at his funky kaleidoscope vision!
from the shock of unknowing had been tamed by the heavenly soothing voice of the shining light that stood before him.
-=The light is standing?!?
If Yomi had legs, he would have fallen over with relaxation by now.
-=Yeah, I fall over from relaxation all the time too…
But Yomi wasn't human, and therefore wasn't structured like one.
-=WELL DU’H!!!!!!!!
Yomi was a purple spheroid blob, a concoction of cells, with two small wings on each side. He may not of realised it at that moment of time, but Yomi was the future of humanity, a sort of primordial soup
-=Mmmm… Lipton Primordial Soup…
that fate had chosen to be the destiny of evolution.
And this thing, this being that was talking to him was like no other as well, Yomi surmised that he was an angel.
The being sensed Yomi's state of unknowing,
-=I’m in a state of unknowing too. The meaning of unknowing is unknown to me.
and smiled benignly.
"You don't know who I am, do you Yomi ?"
-=Are you the pizzaman?
"I'm sorry, my memory hasn't returned yet. I can feel it... fighting. Fighting to remember something, but I know not what." Yomi, looked down at the floor. It was four feet away from his floating body.
-=That fact was really important for the plot
He looked towards the figure again, guessing correctly that he had all the answers Yomi needed.
-=Bad grammatical structure…
Yomi picked the question that was top of his 'list of things to ask', and asked it.
"Who are you ?"
-=I’m the Devil’s Sockpuppet and I’m here to kill you! BWAHAHA!!!
"I am Light Gaia. Watcher of this planet, a combined entity of all the good that is left in this world."
Light Gaia - that name meant something to Yomi. It stirred something in the back of his mind, like a faint memory of a previous life.
"It is time to remember, Yomi," Light Gaia said.
-=I could make references to my "The Incredible Adventures of Yomi" fanfic, but I won’t :P
He reached out with his arm, and gently placed his hand on Yomi's forehead. Yomi closed his eyes and embraced the warm feeling of compassion that was flowing through him. Suddenly, Yomi felt a sharp pain inside of him.
-=Light Gaia just probed him
It felt like his entire brain was in perpetual torment
-=And now he’s brainwashing him!
as his brain was filled with memories long forgotten. Images of the past poured into him, as the pain crescendo'd
-=I refuse to accept that as a verb
inside his head. Then, just as suddenly, it stopped. Yomi opened his eyes, and smiled mischievously.
"Hey boss," Yomi said, "long time no see. What's up ?"
"Welcome back Yomi. I'm afraid your assistance is once more required."
-=Didn’t this conversation just happen?
Light Gaia's face was now filled with seriousness. "Evil has once again reared it's head. It has been exactly one year today since Dark Gaia was defeated. Since then I have watched as the world lived once more in peace. With all traces of evil gone, the planet healed its wounds.
-=Good thing it had extra bandages
It was then that I resurrected all that Dark Gaia had destroyed, and sent the legendary hero to the nether world to sleep until needed once more. That time is now. You must resurrect the hero and banish this new evil,
-=New evil?… *shudders*
once and for all."
Yomi listened intently to the rest of his orders, and when Light Gaia had finished, gave a simple nod of his head,
-=Shouldn’t that be a nod of the body?
winked, then folded in on itself and disappeared.
Chapter 1 - The Resurrection
-=YOU MEAN WE’RE ONLY AT THE BEGINNING!?!
"It has been one year to the day since the awakening, yet you alone have not appreciated the gift we have been given. We have been presented with a second chance of life, a new beginning," the old man was saying to her, not that she was listening.
-=Why isn’t she listening? Maybe it’s because she knows this story is crap whatever the old man says!
The old man noticed her ignorance and sighed. Slowly, he made his way to the window and stared at the sky outside.
"Crystal Blue is flying again today. It hasn't done that since..."
-=Since I last ate beans…
his voice tailed off,
-=Tailed off?
knowing the rest would upset her further.
He turned his attention to her and sighed again. There was no mistaking how truly beautiful she was. Her hair hung neatly down the side of her face,
-=Where else would it hang? Out her butt?
it's tint of purple giving it an enchanted look. If only he was seventy years younger...
-=If only it was still usable…
"Face it Elle. He's gone, and will not return. It was foolish of me to send him on a mission to resurrect the surface world,
-=Weren’t you evil and sent him there to die?
but it was necessary and somehow, he managed it. The great Light Gaia then chose to resurrect us, for reasons unknown, yet you don't seem to care." The Elder waited for a response. None came.
"Elle, please. Tell me what's wrong."
-=I’m outta polished beavers!
She looked at him, her eyes bloodshot from crying a thousand tears.
-=She actually counted them?
"I... miss him," she said, "I miss him so much. He sacrificed his life to save humanity, to save us.
-=He didn’t sacrifice his life! He was forced to sleep dammit!
But there's a part of me who knows he's still alive. I can feel it..." Elle walked over to the window and stared at the beauty of Crystal Blue, "I can feel it in my heart. He's out there... I know he's still out there somewhere."
*****
-=Watch out! Asterisks by the quintuple!
Yomi reappeared in an infinite void of black. The air was musty, and there was a putrid scent of death to it.
-=Hey! GET OUTTA MY BASEMENT!
"Sheesh ! Nice place for a holiday.
-=Wich holiday?
Now, where is he ?"
Yomi scanned the nether world for a source of light. After five minutes, he found one. He moved towards it. An object was floating in the middle of it, suspended in mid-air. As Yomi got closer, he made the figure out to be that of a human. Yomi smiled. The figure was still clad in his usual baggy clothes. Some things never change.
-=Like the goodness of a potatoe
"It's been a while, Ark," Yomi floated around him slowly, "Time to stop dreaming, old buddy."
Yomi started circulating around the body, slowly at first, but speeding up exponentially.
-=Ooo! Big words!
Soon, he was nothing more than a blur, a trail of a trail.
-=Trail of a trail?
And Ark's hand moved slightly. Yomi increased his speed until he was just an octave of sound, a rate of speed that has never been seen before, faster than sound, faster than light, a pitch of noise that would break the thickest of glass in milliseconds.
-=And still, Ark’s head hadn’t exploded yet…
Again Ark's hand moved.
Yomi continued at his speed that broke several laws of reality.
-=As well as laws of stupidity
Ark was beginning to stir now, his head slowly rocked from side to side as if he was dreaming a nightmare and was desperate to wake up. By now, every inch of his body was covered in the white trail of light that Yomi was leaving behind, like a silk cocoon. Ark's eyes started to twitch, the light around him became brighter, as he battled the harshness of unconsciousness. Then, using all the power he could muster, he awoke. His heart jump-started with a jolt, as his eyes flashed wide open with pupils full of life. He breathed, a word trying to escape from the depths of his throat. Using every ounce of energy he had in him, Ark breathed in and screamed out the word.
"ELLE !!!" he shouted.
Then everything went blissfully black.
-=His head finally exploded. Yomi forgot to stop spinning like crazy around him :P
*****
-=Asterisks from hell!
Ark awoke, the coldness of the water bringing him out of his dreamless slumber. He looked around, trying to locate the source of the water. There was nothing in sight.
"Up here, ugly."
-=That’s the only sentence that was worth reading up to know…
Ark looked up to see a purple floating bat-like creature above him, droplets of water falling out of it's body.
-=This is cool! Yomi’s insulting Ark and pissing on him! Nice!
At first he thought he was dreaming, but then realisation dawned on him. Ark's eyes widened and his lips curled into an elegant smile.
"Yomi !!! You're back !"Yomi performed a small loop-de-loop in the air and returned his smile.
"Yeah, I got bored of having no-one to insult. It doesn't feel the same using insults on yourself, it lacks a kind of appeal."
Ark let out a laugh, which faded as he started to look around. He was in the middle of what appeared to be a forest, but it was covered with snow. He guessed correctly that he was in Eklemata. But how ??? Light Gaia had sent him to the nether world to sleep until he was needed once more. Needed to fight once more.
"There's a new evil, isn't there ?"
-=AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! MY HEAD!!!!
Ark had a look of seriousness on his face. "That's why I've been resurrected isn't it ?"
Yomi nodded. "I'm afraid so. It's been one year since you fought and destroyed Dark Gaia. Since that time, the world has been filled with the peace that Light Gaia provided. But now, a new evil
-=STOP IT!!! PLEASE!!!! THE PAIN!!!
threatens our planet. What's worse is that this new evil is a whole lot worse than Dark Gaia." Yomi took a deep breath, and prepared for the explanation, "When you destroyed Dark Gaia a year ago, he wasn't completely destroyed. Milliseconds before you killed him, he realised he was about to die and using every ounce of energy he had left, he sent three power sources to the surface world, each inhibiting a person living there.
-=And those three person were LARRY, CURLY and MOE!!!
This gift that Dark Gaia had bestowed on them gave them immortality, but the three didn't know that the power source had entered them and continued their life as normal. A year has since passed, and in that time, Dark Gaia's energy has revived fully due to the power source's time to heal. But he can't revive unless the three chosen ones meet at a sacred place of evil,
-=The house of the guy who invented Pokemon
then the power source will react with a demonic artefact there,
-=A Teletubby blow-up doll
creating a chain of unprecedented events,
-=Of course, there’s ALWAYS a chain of unprecedented events…
bringing upon the resurrection of Dark Gaia.
-=Who’d have tought of THAT!
Only you have the ability to stop them Ark, it is your destiny."
Ark let out a long sigh, one that had been pent up inside of him for a whole year.
-=Wasn’t he sleeping?
After a minute of thinking, he turned to Yomi.
"Why me. Why is it my destiny to save the world ?"
"Beats me. Maybe Light Gaia likes your hair. But explain this, Ark, since you were found and raised in Crysta,
-=Where the hell did the author get the idea that Ark was "found"?
you've always felt that you are different to the others, you've always had some kind of glow that they haven't.
-=Might have been the gallon of radioactive waste he ate as a kid.
Maybe this has something to do with it, maybe you are different to your fellow villagers. Who knows. All I know is you have a responsibility laid upon you involving the safety of our planet as we know it. You cannot refuse."
-=Ark:Oh yes I can, it’s easy. I refuse. There!
Ark sat there in deep concentration.
-=And deep in something else…
It was true that he had never felt like he fit in with the other villagers, for as long as he can remember. He grinned momentarily as an image from the past entered his mind.
-=How he lost his virginity?
*****
-=The asterisks are works of art!
"There are several youths in this village, Ark, why are you the one that always gets into trouble ?"
-=Ark: ‘Cause I’m special!
Ark felt guilty for what he had done earlier, not that he thought about the consequences at the time. The way he saw it, he had no parents, therefore no-one had the right to tell him what to do and what not to do. He had been found by the crater just east of Crysta village by the Elder when Ark was just a baby. Since then, the villagers welcomed him into their village, feeling sympathy for him for being abandoned.
-=Abandoned by who? THEY’RE THE ONLY POPULATION DOWN THERE!!! And besides, THEY NEVER GOT OUT OF THE VILLAGE!!!
THERE WASN’T EVEN A DOOR BEFORE THE ELDER MADE SO ARK COULD GO AND SAVE THE WORLD!!! ARRRGH!!!
But he soon caused more trouble than anyone else in the village, he seemed to have no regards for rules and laws.
-=He’s a rebel without a clue!
He just thought that he could get away with anything, so did what he pleased. He always regretted it later, when consequences and punishments were carried out.
And now he was being given a talking to from the Elder.
-=Elder: Here Ark, I give to you this brand-spanking-new talking
"Well, what do you have to say for yourself, Ark ?" he was saying.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean any harm by it. I was just..."
-=Ark: It was just that the pumpkin was laughing at me again…
Ark never got a chance to finish his sentence.
"You were just WHAT ???" the Elder interrupted, steam almost coming out of his ears, "Get out of my sight. I don't want to hear another word from you until you have made up for your wrongs."
-=Knowing what Ark did would help the story…
Ark looked down at his feet,
-=… untied his shoe laces so he would trip later…
then left. He ran outside the house,
-=… tripped in his shoe laces…
and fell to his knees, crying. He looked up at the night sky, even the stars seemed to be frowning at him. He sat there staring at them for a while, lost in their beauty."
"Are you okay ?"
Ark snapped out of his gaze and followed the voice to the figure standing in front of him. She was more beautiful than a million sunsets.
-=She was like a Million and one
He smiled at her.
"Yeah, I'm okay. I just gotta stop getting caught, that's all."
Elle shook her head. "Ark, you've got to stop doing this. Getting into trouble all the time. I know you feel bitter about the fact you were abandoned..." Elle paused as Ark looked back up at the stars,
-=Wha? When did night arrive?
then continued, "but my people have been good to you since you were found. We took you in, fed you, gave you a place to call 'home'.
-=Sure, there were the occasional beatings, but those don’t count…
Why have you abused this ?"
The guilt that Ark had felt a short while ago had now tripled in volume. This girl standing in front of him had the ability to make him feel bad for things that the Elder couldn't manage, even when yelling at Ark at the top of his voice.
"You're right," Ark said finally, "I'm sorry for what I did. I just wanted you to notice me."
"By setting my weaving on fire ?
-=You go Ark! Burn those weavings! Burn ‘em good!
Good technique." Elle grinned at him, "Why did you want me to notice you ?"
"I don't know. There's just something about you, I feel like I've known you before, like in a past life or something. From the first moment I saw you, I felt drawn to you in a way I never thought possible. Yet you didn't seem to even know I was alive. All the trouble I got into, I was just trying to get you to talk to me, to notice me."
Elle smiled sadly. "I... I feel the same way. Whenever I looked at you, it made me feel something much like you just described, and it scared me. I don't know why, it just did. I thought... I thought the best way around this was to avoid you. I realise now that I was wrong. I'm sorry, Ark."
Ark returned her sad smile. "I was abandoned in this village years ago,
-=Not true: He was abandonned by the crater NEAR the village…
I resent my parents, whoever they are, for leaving me like that. But it in a way, I am grateful as it brought me to you. But yet even to this day, I feel somehow different to the others, like I don't belong here."
"You are somehow different, I agree. You're special Ark. You have a natural ability with things that the rest of us lack.
-=Like drinking beer and not getting drunk
I have a strange feeling though that you'll leave one day, for a long time. Please Ark, promise me you won't. I couldn't bare it if you left. Promise me.." Elle stared at him, her eyes filled with tears.
Ark stared back at her. "I'll always be with you, Elle. Always."
-=Ark: Except for when I’ll have to save the world.
He wiped the tear that was slowly making it's way down her cheek. He had the same feeling as she did, that one day he would leave the village he had grown up in. He was right, there was something different about him. Something that he would one day discover.
-=While mowing the lawn
*****
"Something different..." Ark thought out aloud.
Yomi looked at him curiously.
"What ?"
"Huh ?"
-=What? Huh? Who? Where? WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Ark snapped back into reality, "Oh, nothing. So my little purple friend, are we gonna get started or what ?"
Ark grinned.
"That's the Ark I know and... err.. well... like. Ish." Yomi said.
"So who are the three chosen ones ?"
-=Maybe it’s not Larry, Curly and Moe after all…
"Well, Light Gaia has been watching over the surface world and have noticed strange activities eminating from two people. I'm afraid that not even he knows who the third is. You're not going to like the two that we do know however. Dark Gaia knew that you would be brought back to life to deal with the three people he infected. Therefore he made them people you know well, thus making it harder for you to succeed. The only way to stop the power source within them, is to kill them. The source feeds on their souls, growing more and more with intensity by the second. If the person loses their soul, the source loses it's energy."
"I have to kill people I know ?
-=Well, you knew Dark Gaia and still killed him!
I can't do that !" Ark was in shock.
"You have to. The entire world depends on it. Now, we must travel to Colorado, there's a harbour two miles south of here. Let's get going, Arkie."
"Ark."
"Whatever."
Ark ran his hands through his soft, thick hair that sprouted in all directions, yet somehow managed to look neat, in a ruggish kind of way. He rose to his feet and stretched, then the two of them headed out of Eklemata. Before he left, he turned around and took in the wonderful sight of the snow forest. It was here that Ark had witnessed the beginning of human evolution. How fitting that it was also the place where Ark would begin his new quest to save humanity.
"Hey," Yomi shouted after him, "come on slow-coach, get moving."
Ark turned away from the impressive view and started walking. He muttered something under his breath, and started to run, in order to catch up with Yomi.
"It begins..."
-=AW!!! Couldn’t it end?
