One Lonely Outpost Finally Launches, and a Port of a Steam Game is Coming to Nintendo Switch | Posted at 04:25 PM 07 March 2025

photographHappy Farm'n Friday! Besides the established blooming daffodils, the Grecian wildflowers are beginning to open up as well. These guys are a little trickier though, as they only show off their colors when the sun is shining. If it is cloudy or raining, the blooms stay closed. These guys hang out down by the street, among the iris rhizomes. I grab a bag or two of bulbs every year when they're marked-down at the end of the season for a quick bit of color at the beginning of the year.

Last weekend I finished pruning the blueberries and two of the hydrangeas. This weekend looks like another good time to continue with winter cleanup, such as moving all the dead leaves to the empty patch in the corner. Hopefully I can get those tilled into the soil to make it a little more workable than its current state. Ug, clay soil is tough to grow in, which is why a lot of stuff I have is in pots; three hydrangeas are in pots and doing well, but the one in the ground does poorly every year. May need to move it to a pot someday.

Don't forget RokaPlay's farming game, Sugardew Valley was released today on Steam and Nintendo Switch. While Steam players have their keys already, RokaPlay is having a bit of a delay getting the keys from Nintendo US for the game's download. They're working on a solution with press keys for now. This doesn't impact keys for other Nintendo regions.

I know the game's title sounds similar to Stardew Valley, but during development, RokaPlay did pose the question whether they should change the game's title because of how close it is to Stardew. Supporters noted they preferred the existing title, so they kept it as Sugardew.

OLO Launches

Alien world development game One Lonely Outpost finally exited Steam Early Access this week. This space farming game was originally crowdfunded in September 2020 with a 2022 estimated release, but after some time the game changed ownership from original developer Aurorian Studios to publisher Freedom Games (now known as Indie.io). It also had a graphic adjustment that took it from a more pixel-based game to 3D-ish graphic, which had a mixed response from its patient supporters. It has been a long space journey for this project, for sure. The game is now available on Epic Game Store, Steam, Microsoft Game Pass, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and XBox.

OLO sets players on the alien world of Calypso, tasked with building a new outpost for the Pan-Galatic Parliament. Presumably, the world is uninhabited, but there are hints that intel might have been incorrect. Grow crops, build new facilities, catch bugs and fish using drone mini-games, collect resources from the area, and terraform the world to create an enticing spot for other space pioneers to call home. Maybe even find a little romance among the colonists, too.

Besides regular crops, gene splicing equipment allows galactic farmers to mix veggies together to come up with something entirely new. Besides crops there are space livestock, which can be either organic or robotic in nature. Produced goods can be processed into meals to fuel the requests from residents of the colony, which are then completed by adding the goods to the community box.

Looks like an interesting take on a farming game, though Freedom Games hasn't released the home console keys to financial supporters yet. The game has a launch-week discount on Steam (55% off until March 12) and GOG (55% off until March 17), and a two-week discount on the Nintendo eShop (20% off until March 22), though no discounts on Epic Game Store, PlayStation 5, and XBox. The GOG version is still listed as the Early Access release for now.

Indie.io also notes that the studio will not be issuing other Kickstarter backer rewards other than the game key due to changes that were made to the game after the crowdfunding campaign concluded. No exclusive hats, farm furniture, or other pledged goods from Aurorian Studio will be honored. So those of us who funded the game at a higher tier in anticipation of extra goodies are expected to be satisfied with a $9 Steam key. Wonderful. Such is the nature of crowdfunding; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's important to keep in mind that crowdfunding isn't a guaranteed result and to only fund up to an amount you won't mind losing if the whole project turns into a pile of manure.

Ported Farm'n - Tales of Autumn

Looks like RedDeer Games will be publishing another tiny-developed indie farming game soon. Besides Dreamland Farm, Garden Buddies, Sprout Island, and soon Ashwood Valley, the indie publisher will be releasing developer Hidden Stag Games' Tales of Autumn digitally on March 20 for Nintendo Switch.

In this farming sim, players move to the town of Autumn to take over an old farm. Once connected to nature, the farm and the knowledge of its former owner had been lost over time. Farmers are to raise crops and rebuild the relationships between the wild, mythical creatures and the humanoid townsfolk. Participate in festivals, complete requests, and build biomes to house the standard farm animals and legendary beasts, such as manticores and jackalopes, that will live on the farm.

This is a home console port of a game that was released on Steam in October 2023.

Until next time
