Having Babies
Once you have managed to convince someone to marry you, he or she will move into your house. For marriage candidates who have shops or farms, they will still go to their place of work: Lillie is unavailable while she works on her weather forecasting report, Fritz works on his farm, Iris goes to the Antique Shop to write, etc. Even though your spouse may be busy with his or her own life, he or she will return to your farm house each night.
Since you have a life partner, and you can't get divorced, it is only natural that you may want to have offspring. To make room for more people in your house, you will need to upgrade your house to the two-story size. This will cost you 500,000 G (or 350,000 G if you are playing in Seedling mode). The materials you need are 120 Lumber, 120 Stone, 30 Black Lumber, 30 Black Stone, and 10 Orichalcum.
Your offspring will have the same eye color and hair color as your spouse. It will have none of your features, since players can customize their characters at any time.
Pregnancy Event
The type of marriage ceremony you selected will determine when your pregnancy event will happen:
- The Simple ceremony will result in a pregnancy 30 days after the wedding
- The Super ceremony will result in a pregnancy 20 days after the wedding
- The Gorgeous ceremony will result in a pregnancy 15 days after the wedding
Remember, you need to have your house upgraded to the Two-Story House. If you don't have it completed by the time of your scheduled pregnancy, it will happen the day after you have completed the house upgrade requirement.
In the morning of the event, the female-side of the partnership will feel ill. You'll visit Dr. Marian at the clinic. He'll let you know about the pregnancy, and then send you on your way.
If you're playing as the girl farmer, the pregnancy will not affect your stamina levels. You will be able to do everything you were able to do prior to the event. If you're playing as the boy farmer, your spouse will do her daily movements just like before you saw the event.
The pregnancy will last 30 days, regardless of the style of wedding plan you selected.
Baby Stage
In the morning after the 30 days have elapsed, the female-side of the partnership will feel unwell again. The two of you will go to Marian's clinic for the birthing event. After you hear the baby cry, Angela asks you to wait a moment; soon afterwards there's another cry. Yea, you've got twins! Marian will ask you to give them names. The boy will be named first, then the girl.
You will always have a boy and girl. You can't force the game to give you two boys, two girls, a cow and a chicken, or any other type of offspring that you would prefer to have. You also cannot opt to have just one child (or more than two).
The birthing event will take the entire day. The following day you'll find the twins upstairs in the second bed. You can't interact with them, and if you press the A Button while standing next to the bed, you'll get prompted to go to sleep for the day.
The twins will stay in this stage for 62 days, and you can't increase their friendship during this time by giving gifts or talking to them. Their friendship will only increase if you happen to participate in events that raise friendship with your family such as birthday dinners, anniversary vacations, and so on.
Crawling Stage
In the morning of the 62nd day, you'll discover that your spawn are now able to crawl. You'll see a cut scene where they crawl up to you in the morning, spewing baby talk and various other attempted words. They also will now be wearing little hats; the boy will have a blue patch on his hat, and the girl will have a pink patch.
You might have seen them crawling around during the cut scene, but from that point onward the kids are back in bed. You'll now see them taking a nap (at random times), sitting upright and waving their arms, and even moving to different spots on the bed. The kids won't actually leave the bed though, as it is acting as their baby crib.
At this point you can now talk to the kids, even when they're asleep, and you'll get a response. The bed will no longer prompt you to use it to go to sleep for the day. The kids are still too young to give gifts to, and any attempt at giving will just result in some conversation text. Talking to them will help with friendship though.
Walking Stage
After another 88 days go by, in the morning you'll see your two kids out of bed and full grown. This will happen 26 days after your kids' first birthday, which you won't be celebrating because they're still in bed on their first birthday. Now that they are out of bed, you will be able to celebrate their birthday each year by walking into your farm house between 17:00 and 23:00 on the date they were born.
The kids won't get any older than this walking stage.
Schedule-wise, the kids will be in the farm house between 6:00 and 9:00, then they'll be in a random location on your farm or in the wild areas between your farm and Oak Tree Town. They'll come back to the house around 17:30, and then go to bed at 21:00.
You can now give gifts to your kids. They both have Blue and Red as their favorite colors, and generally like the same gifts, but they do vary here and there. For example, the boy child likes large-sized fish, such as Alligator Gar and Moray Eel, but the girl doesn't like them.
Favorite Gift (+1000 FP)
Pancakes = Flour + Egg + Milk + Honey. This Snack category cooking recipe can be bought from Wheat Country for 1200 G starting in Fall of year 1. The Honey can't be bought anywhere, so you will need to take Conquest over the Bee/Mushroom field. Placing bees into the existing Bee Huts will seed the boxes so the insects produce honey during Spring, Summer, and Fall. You can use any type of honey for this cooked recipe.
Loved Gifts (+500 FP)
The easiest gift that they both like is Egg Soup or Milk Soup. Both kids like fruity ice cream (e.g., Cherry Ice Cream, Chocolate Ice Cream, Soft Serve Ice Cream, etc.), Chocolate Pudding and Almond Pudding, Banana Juice, and Bavarian Cream.
The girl likes Carrot Soup, Cream Puff, Shortcake and Mango Cake, while the boy likes the Mini Propeller and Chocolate Juice. The Mini Propeller is a tool you can buy from Wheat Country for 150,000 G each starting in year 4, so it is not a very efficient gift.
Liked Gifts (+300 FP)
This is where the kids like a lot of items such as cheese, mayo, jams, eggs, milk, other snack category cooked dishes, Strawberry, Watermelon, Pineapple, Melon, Carrot Juice and Mango Juice, Glittering Stone, animal treats and animal feed, honey, and tree fruit (Apples, Grapes, etc.).
Individually, the boy likes insects and fish, and the girl likes downy tuft, cloth, fireflies, flowers, and butterflies.
Family Events
Now that the kids are full grown, you will begin to see them appear at the Trade Depot during festivals and at your table during Wedding Anniversary and Birthday events.
You'll also participate in a re-occurring outing. When you enter your house between 6:00 and 12:00, your kids will ask if the family can go on a picnic together. Your spouse has told them that you were busy, but they want to go anyway. You can enthusiastically tell them you're all going on a picnic (+1000 FP with family), that you'll go anyway (+300 FP with family), or that you can't go right now (-500 FP with family). You will spend a part of the day with your kids and spouse, running around and having fun. You'll return to your farm house at 14:00.
The picnic event will trigger a minimum of 31 days apart as long as your kids remain above 40,000 FP. You'll be at the right level if music notes appear above their heads when you stand next to them and press the Left Shoulder Button on your Nintendo 3DS. You can also use your farm house bookshelf to see their friendship levels, but keep in mind that each heart on your family profile is about 6000 FP, and the sixth heart appears when you have around 36,000 FP; not necessarily 40k.
The other is a one-time Welcome Home event. Walk into your farm area on a sunny day between 17:00 and 19:00 when your kids are grown and they both have at least 40,000 FP. Your kids will be patiently waiting for you to come home. Your son tells you about the bugs that he caught, but your daughter explains that he had actually fallen into the river while catching insects. Mom was really angry! The boy is bothered that his sister told you about it, but she said that mom would have told you anyway.
You can then select a response: either to encourage him to do it again (+500 FP with boy, -500 FP with girl) or to warn him of how dangerous that was (+1000 FP with both kids). If you remind him to be careful, your son will tell you that he'll be careful not to get hurt. Then you pat them on the head, and they race you back to the house.
