New World First Week | Posted at 10:17 PM 07 March 2014
Harvest Moon: Connect to a New World has been out for a week, and quite a few players have already rushed through the game to get married. It turns out there are three tiers of wedding plans (based on cost), and two styles of weddings: a western wedding or an eastern wedding. The western wedding has the wedding dress and tuxedo, while the eastern wedding has kimonos. While the Japanese players are far along, those of us who imported are really just getting started. I received my copy on Tuesday and have only made it to mid-Spring so far.

You spend your first week in the game at your neighbor's farm. Edda will show you how to water crops, care for animals, etc. This is not a skippable tutorial and it is part of the story line of the game. When you receive your own farm, Veronica explains that she wants you to do business with the trading countries and anticipates that this will bring activity (and people) to Oak Tree Town. This means that there is no shipping bin in the game; you have to collect your products and take them to the Trade Station. At the beginning of the game you can only sell your products to Silkroad, and only on days of the week that Silkroad has set up shop in the Trade Station. Luckily your rucksack has 50 slots, so there's plenty of space to carry things around until you can sell. Villagers will walk from place to place, and sometimes you can see them stop and pose. Even the shopkeepers aren't always standing directly behind the counter, but you can walk up and press A at the counter and they'll respond. The villagers aren't so stiff. Since they tend to do things, this means you can't always give them a gift. If Angela is bent down to look at a bookcase, you have to wait for her to stand back up before you can give her a gift; you can't just drop it on her head and move on! They also walk at a faster pace, so you may find yourself tossing gifts at spots where the villager used to be standing. The starting old tools take a lot of stamina to use, but you can upgrade your tools after Geizer builds the construction table and fixes up your run-down house. The free mini upgrade also unlocks the Closet that allows you to change your hairstyle, hair and eye color, skin type, and face style at any time. No need to go to a salon or visit a cranky witch to change your face. Challenge-wise, you have to ship a lot to entice the other countries to visit Oak Tree Town. There are also a lot of trophies you can achieve such as catching the largest of each type of fish. The game even gives you a percentage of how many you've unlocked (2% for me! slow and steady...) Overall, the game seems like it has many features of Harvest Moon: A New Beginning available within the first two weeks of the game, but reserves the main challenge of the game for much later on down the road. Media Create, the go-to company for vide game sales trends in Japan, has reported that New World sold a little more than 130,700 copies in its first week of release, making it the most sold game for any console during that period. It's been two years since a Harvest Moon game was released in Japan, so I'd imagine there's been a lot of anticipation for its release. I've started posting content to the YouTube channel, with more to come later! - Cher
