Bovine-y Farm Animals
The first animal you'll care for on your farm is Hanako the cow, given to you by your lovely neighbor, Eda. You can collect milk from cows every day by using a Milker tool. The milk can be converted into Cheese, Butter, or Yogurt by using the Cheese Factory maker shed. You can purchase additional cows from the Trade Depot vendors:
- The normal Cow can be purchased for 10,000 G each at Silk Country or Cabin Country. There are three types of spotted cows available, yet they all produce the same type of Milk. The different styles are randomly for sale at the vendors. Hanako will always be the style with the mostly-black head and blue collar.
- The fancier Jersey can be purchased for 20,000 G each at Cabin Country starting in Spring of year 2. These cows make Jersey Milk that sells for a little more money than regular Milk. Jerseys come in two styles: all brown or brown spotted.
- The exotic Zebu is a breed of cow that you can buy for 30,000 G each at Wheat Country starting in Spring of year 4. This cow only comes in one pattern style. It produces Zebu Milk that sells for even more money than Jersey Milk.
This version of Story of Seasons / Harvest Moon does not have the classic-style Bubble Cow for sale.
Collecting Milk
Eda will give you an Old Milker that you can use to collect milk once per day as long as the animals' stress level isn't too high. Upgrading the Old Milker tool will reduce the amount of Stamina you lose while milking your cows as well as reduce the amount of time it takes to obtain milk.
You can increase the amount of milk you receive from your cows by feeding them treats. Give your cows Moo-Moo Treats to raise the By-Products level. You can buy these treats from Cabin Country for 200 G each. You'll need to give (at most) 160 Moo-Moo Treats to raise a normal Cow to 5 By-Products, 114 Moo-Moo Treats to raise a Jersey to 5 By-Products, and 202 Moo-Moo Treats to raise a Zebu to 5 By-Products. The number of By-Products it gives will never decrease if you stop giving it treats.
To make your cows permanently produce Milk+, Jersey Milk+, and Zebu Milk+, each cow must spend at least 100 in-game hours in the Safari. You might obtain plus-quality goods from a Cow or Jersey with an Active personality, or a Zebu with a Level-headed personality, once the cow reaches at least 7 friendship hearts.
Birth and Death
Impregnating a cow can be done at any of the vendors at the Trade Depot. Just select "Ask about Animals" when talking with a vendor, then select "Breed animals." You can breed normal Cows and Jersey, but not Zebu.
Pregnancy will last 20 days. While the cow is pregnant it will be placed in the special pregnancy pen in the upper-right corner of the animal barn. You don't have to feed the cow or take it outside; you can't give it treats either. After 20 days the cow will give birth to a smaller version of itself. The baby cow will take another 20 days to mature as long as it is fed every day.
Cows will naturally pass away when they become too old. A normal, well-cared for Cow has a chance of passing away when it is 5 years old, a Jersey can pass away beginning at 7 years old, and a Zebu can pass away beginning at 7 years old. That doesn't mean it will die once it reaches a certain age: my in-game Hanako is a season short of being 9 years old and still very much alive.
