You've received a letter from your childhood friend, asking for help with a matter relating to your hometown of Alba. You've been gone for 10 years! Your friend now works at the Village Hall and laments how peope are moving away. It is great to hear you moving back to start your own farm, just like the Lil' Leaf Farm you both pretended to run when you were kids. The letter ends with a plea from your friend to help Alba.
There are two protagonists in this game: Justin and Christina. Whichever you choose to play as will make the second protagonist be the one who works at the Village Hall.
You'll meet Justin/Christina in front of the Village Hall. After a quick greeting, they'll show you the farm space. It's quite different from the Lil' Leaf Farm from your childhood. This space is a little wilder; the field is empty, and the barn is covered in ivy. No matter, your friend has enlisted someone to show you the ropes. They then return to work at the Village Hall.
After a short wait, Willis arrives. The dad of your childhood friend, Willis, is pleased to see how well you've grown. Though he isn't a professional farmer -- after all, he works at the Village Hall too -- he knows the basics of farm care. Willis gives you a Hand-made Hoe, some Turnip Seeds, a Hand-made Watering Can, and 3 Fertilizer. After he instructs you on the basics of farm work, Willis remembers that he was supposed to collect mushrooms. He asks that you collect three fungus and deliver it to Justin/Christina at the Village Hall.
While there is a Morel Mushroom behind the livestock barn, Willis specifically asked for "Mushroom." You can find these scattered along the path leading east out of the farm space. There's one near the fenceline by the livestock barn, too.
During your Mushroom hunt, you'll meet some Alba villagers like Jonathan, Victoria (his mom), Philip, and Olivia. Once you've completed Willis' task, head to the counter in the Village Hall to hand over the fungus. Now that the task is done, your friend suggests you head home for the day to rest.
The following day, you see someone leaving as they put something in your mailbox. Oh, it's the Alba Times, the local newspaper! You'll receive a newspaper after breakfast when there is something essential to know, such as tips to help you live more comfortably in the village or when a festival occurs. The newspaper isn't delivered every day.
As you're enjoying today's paper, your childhood friend stops by to tell you how delicious yesterday's Mushrooms were. It's great that you've come back to start a farm. Maybe Frederick would... ah, never mind. Justin/Christina will remind you to water your Turnip seedlings and ask that you stop by the Village Hall to finish some move-in paperwork.
Visit the Village Hall after watering the Turnip crops. Your childhood friend will help name the farm (up to 9 characters) and give you a guidebook for the village. This guide is essentially your Main Menu and contains the World Map, the Request List, the seasonal Calendar (4 seasons per year, 28 days per season), the list of Friends in town, the Encyclopedia that tracks the items you've discovered, a Records section containing assets and awards, a list of Tips in case you forget anything, and the Game Settings.
Now you're a full-fledged member of Alba village!
