Before you leave the Village Hall, talk to Olivia about her plan to build an honor-system unmanned store. Olivia asks that you bring her 10 Board Lumber, 10 Material Stone, and 10 Tulip. She'll have Andy set up a three-slot stall in the area between the Village Hall Bridge and the bridge leading to Alba's center. Village Hall will post a recommended category for items to add to the Unmanned Store. Add up to three different items to the stall that match the category, and if the item sells, you'll earn bonus profit and some Happiness after you go to bed for the day. If the item does NOT sell, you'll be charged a fee that could cancel the profit you earned from successful sales. Submitting a stack of items keeps the Unmanned Store open for multiple days, with each day deducting an item from the stack until there is nothing left to sell.
Head out to learn more about Hugo. You'll discover that the chef used to work at a famous restaurant in the city called Sommet. Hugo's style of cooking doesn't fit in with the theme of Alba, but it's unique enough that some of the villagers like his food while some do not. Hugo tends to keep to himself and has no friends he can rely upon, so he has locked himself inside his restaurant. Another rumor is that Fredrick has stopped selling his vegetables to Hugo. Fredrick confirms that he was selling his produce to Piemont, but that has nothing to do with you!
Tessa will ask for your help getting the fruit orchard functioning again. She needs 10 Board Lumber, 10 Square Lumber, and 10 Material Stone. Tessa will repair the gate to the fruit orchard, where you can wander in and take as much fruit as you want. You'll find Apple, Orange, and Peach Trees. The orchard also is a shortcut from Philip's farm space to Fredrick's fields.
Once you've talked with everyone and have earned a lot of Happiness (i.e., filled the star bottle up about 80%), track down Justin/Christina to compile your data together. It turns out that Hugo worked at a very fancy restaurant before moving to Alba. His restaurant isn't doing very well because interest in his cuisine is mixed. Some villagers like the taste of his food, while others don't care for his cooking style. Fredrick stopped selling his vegetables to Hugo because the farmer didn't like how Hugo was utilizing the produce. In Alba, no parts of a vegetable go to waste, but Hugo only uses the good parts, which ruffled Fredrick's feathers. Justin/Christina asks that you go break the news to Hugo.
Head into the restaurant and speak with an aggravated Hugo. Change his dishes to match the palate of Alba? Ridiculous! Hugo has trained with the best and has no intention of changing his cooking style until you convince him that it's in his best interest to at least try. Now Hugo recognizes the problem, but he is using the other parts of each produce. Leftover peels and cores go into making broth, and he turns other scraps into snacks. The issue is the villagers don't see the gratitude for the ingredients produced by the town. Hugo decides to make the local version of Pot-au-feu, which may show the villagers that he's not ungrateful for their produce. Since he doesn't have a vegetable supplier at the moment, Hugo asks that you bring him 3 Carrots, 3 Broccoli, and 3 Potato. You can buy all of these seeds at Victoria's General Store.
Bring the crops to Hugo. The freshness of the crops reminds him why he left the big-city restaurant to open Piemont in Alba. He intends to ensure that no part of a vegetable is left unused. Your help has reminded him that the purpose of cooking is to forge bonds between the cooks and those who are hungry. Hugu gets started on making his new recipe with the hope that it will be good enough to impress the grouchy Fredrick.
The next morning, an article in the Alba Times reports on the massive success of Hugo's version of Albla-style Pot-au-feu. Head back to Justin/Christina, where you'll learn that Frederick now sells his crops to Piemont again. Your friend is pleased that the two of you resolved the problem with Hugo's restaurant. Together, you can make their dream of revitalizing Alba into a reality!
Encouragement from your childhood friend will reward you with +1 stamina heart
Go talk with Penelope at the carpenter's shop, who offers to increase the size of your 10-slot bag. She asks you to bring her 2 Fabric, 10 Hibiscus, and 10 Lotus. Fabric is made at Andy's shop by giving him 4 Sheep Wool and 30 G. Hibiscus Seeds are now at Victoria's General Store along with Lotus Seeds. Once completed, each portion of your bag will hold 20 items.
Looking around, you'll find new villagers, like Agatha and Luka, but they're a bit stingy like the others. There are also a few tourists! You'll hear rumors about Frederick, though. Seems like the old farmer isn't out in his fields anymore. The grouchy miner Peter also mentions that Fredrick hasn't been by his place either. Fredrick himself isn't revealing any secrets. Hmm strange...
Philip offers a Feeder Dispenser upgrade for your Animal Barn. He'll ask for 10 Palm Board Lumber, 10 Palm Square Lumber, and 10 Material Stone. Bring him the materials to unlock the feeder's secondary function, the auto-feeder. It would help if you upgraded to an Expert Axe to chop down the Palm Trees along the beach.
The next morning, head to Village Hall and talk with Justin/Christina. They heard from Hugo that the old farmer's deliveries have been short and wonders if it is another one of Alba's misunderstandings. You offer to check on Fredrick. Justin/Christina recommends a different approach, such as talking about other subjects with him before directly digging into Fredrick's problems. You might learn something by talking to the other villagers.
Talk to Willis to hear his plan for revitalizing an old tradition called the Equestrian Challenge. He wants 10 Palm Board Lumber, 10 Palm Square Lumber, and 10 Sunflower. Bring him the materials to unlock the horse race on Summer 23 and Winter 23. Once you complete this task, talk to him again to unlock the requirements for the remaining contest festivals.
