Chapter 3: Jeanne's Problems

Return to Chapter 2

At this point, you'll be able to complete villager requests and start collecting Happiness. This value is increased by interacting with villagers, shipping things via the shipping bin (you may have noticed the star that appears on the shipping tally after you go to bed), and completing villager task requests. As Happiness increases, the grouchy villagers will become more welcoming. You can see your current Happiness level by opening the Main Menu (the 3-bar icon) and selecting the Happiness icon at the bottom of the screen. Gosh, the star-shaped bottle is pretty empty...

Talking to villagers can now trigger Villager Requests. The person will tell you what they're looking for and the reward they'll offer for its return. Some tasks have deadlines, so complete them before they expire. You can choose to not accept a request. Nothing negative will happen if a task expires before you turn over the requested goods.

Walk around Alba to see if anyone knows what's bothering Jeanne. There's a particularly dashing fellow by Andy's shop wearing a white lab coat. The young man introduces himself as Doc Jr - a renowned genius, inventor, and your dear friend. He's around to talk if you're interested.

Head down to the Animal Shop and talk to Philip. He'll give you instructions on rebuilding your farm's Animal Barn. He requests that you bring him 3 Lumber and 3 Stone. You can buy an Old Axe and an Old Hammer at Victoria's general store for 300 G each.

Victoria might have a 30% discount sale on Spring 11. Watch your farm mailbox around the 8th for the announcement flyer. You can buy the Old Axe and Old Hammer for 200 G each on that day, along with the Old Fishing Rod for 560 G instead of 800 G.

Bring Philip the lumber and stone, and he'll instruct Andy to repair the barn. You'll also receive a free adult cow, a Pitchfork, 5 Animal Feed, a Brush, a Milker, Clippers, and an Old Sickle for cutting grass to make feed. Keep 1 Milk in your rucksack or refrigerator, because you'll need the cow's milk to complete this chapter.

Victoria mentions Jeanne but doesn't know why their town reporter is upset. If you do find Jeanne, standing cautiously close to Frederick and Tessa's farmhouse, the reporter won't open up either. There is something she wants to discuss with the farmers. This is so strange. You might also hear rumors of troubles with obtaining lumber and paper due to mismanagement of the local forest.

Shipping the same high-quality products can earn that product the designation of Local Specialty from the Village Hall. The more local specialties there are, the more famous Alba can become. This also helps boost happiness and rewards you with bonus money. Special Products will be noted in your encyclopedia with a gold medal on its encyclopedia entry image.

To move the story along, work on increasing Happiness. Ship items, complete tasks, and give gifts to increase the sand in the star-shaped bottle. Once you're about 80% of the way through, you may be prompted in the morning to talk to Justin/Christina at the Village Hall. They'll explain they believe Jeanne's problem is the need for more paper to print her newspaper. The forest is a mess, making it difficult to acquire wood to turn into pulp and paper. Justin/Christina asks that you head out to the forest to investigate, but the issue is that Fredrick owns the land; hence, why Jeanne has been hanging around their farmhouse, trying to muster the courage to talk to the grouchy farmer. He also asks that you bring Jeanne 1 Milk to help lighten her mood.

Head towards the large farm and talk to Tessa. She heard from Justin/Christina about the forest problem and has opened the gate for you. The forest is east of the Fredrick farm's house, at the base of the path leading up to Peter's mine. Walk past the once-locked gate and chop trees so that there are at least 3 squares of space around each trunk. One tree near the gate, one in the middle a little north of the gate, and one on the eastern side should be enough to make space in the forest. You only need to chop the trees; leaving the stump behind is okay. An on-screen prompt will appear after the remaining trees have enough space.

After cleaning the forest, bring Jeanne a milk bottle. She perks up right away! You also tell her the forest problem is solved, allowing paper manufacturing again. Amazing! Jeanne asks if there is anything she can do in return. You tell her about Justin/Christina's idea of writing an article about your farm. Jeanne is excited to get started writing now that she is reenergized!

Jeanne's article appears in the next morning's newspaper. How exciting! Head to Village Hall and talk to Justin/Christina about the published article. Now that the hard work you've done with the farm was published for everyone to read, your friend has an idea to host an event that will bring notoriety to Alba.

Encouragement from your childhood friend will reward you with +1 stamina heart

Talk to Andy the carpenter. He has a tool for creating Fertilizer for your crops. Bring him 10 Board Lumber, 10 Square Lumber, and 10 Material Stone. He'll then install the compost-processing machine next to your fields. The Fertilizer Maker includes the recipe for normal Fertilizer (1 Compost = 1 Fertilizer). Future upgrades will unlock seasonal fertilizers.

Ah, things are back to normal. Though, Jonathan notices that Hugo hasn't been around lately...

The following day, Willis stops by. As thanks for your help, Jeanne, Andy, and the others got together and expanded your farm space! Now, there is a total of three crop fields. In fact, with three fields, you could choose to not grow crops! Willis will explain the basics of field rotation, whereby farmers will let a field rest to retain nutrients in the soil. You see, growing crops constantly in one field will deplete the soil and cause a reduction in crop quality. With three fields, you can grow crops in one while letting the other fields rest.

Willis also explains Repeated Actions, which lets you tap and drag to cover a wider area when sowing, fertilizing, and harvesting. At this point, only non-tool-related tasks are supported by Repeated Actions. The ability to use this feature for tilling and watering is obtained by upgrading your Watering Can and your Hoe at Andy's shop.

Head to the Village Hall and talk with Justin/Christina. They also noticed that Hugo seemed to be acting strangely. The other day, they visited Hugo's restaurant, Piemont, and noticed all the lights were turned off. Justin/Christina went inside anyway and were greeted by a grouchy Hugo, who bellowed at them to leave. We can't sit by while one of their own appears to be in trouble! Your childhood friend suggests you talk to the others while they dig for information on their own.
