Licorice

Licorice traveled from a far away town, where she used to help her uncle at his fruit orchard, in search of plants for her to study. She feels that plants have their own spirits and can respond to how they are treated by humans. Licorice even takes the time to talk to the plants she comes across. Weird? Perhaps, but it is all part of her research.

You won't meet Licorice until you are in Summer of year 2 or later. Walk from the paddy field area to the bridge area between 7:30 and 10:00 on a sunny Monday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. After you unlock her, she'll live at Maurice's inn in room 202.

Licorice spends most of her time wandering around the wild areas outside of town. On Sundays and Tuesdays between 10:30 and 20:00 she'll be unavailable, as she ventures out to areas that you can't access.

Soybean Seeds are sold at Silk Country for 300 G each after you ship 50,000 G worth of items to Asche, and can be grown in any season. Cabbage is a Spring season crop, and its seeds are sold at the Rose Country vendor for 770 G each once you reach year 2 or later.

All of Licorice's loved gifts are cooked recipes. The easiest are Herb Soup, Spinach Salad, and Simmered Potato. The recipe for Herb Soup is the reward from a special request posted on the Trade Depot message board. The recipes for Spinach Salad and Simmered Potato can be purchased from the Sakura Country vendor at the Trade Depot once you've unlocked him.

The other cooked recipes she likes are Plum Vinegar Salad, Mixed Salad, Burdock Root Salad, Burdock Root Soup, Grilled Pumpkin, Tofu Hamburger, and Sauteed Lotus Root.

Liked Gifts (+300 FP)

Licorice likes flowers, whether you grow them yourself (Cactus, Hilton Daisy, roses, and such) or they grow wild (Moondrop, Red Magic Flower, etc.). Another easy item she likes are tea drinks made in your kitchen.

Licorice seems to be looking around at the plants in the area. You walk up to greet her, but she's so absorbed with looking at plants that she doesn't notice you.

• Choice 1: Observe her

  Result: +2000 FP with Licorice

  You stand back and watch her for a while until she's finished with her observations. When she goes to leave, she doesn't expect anyone to be standing behind her! Why are you just standing there doing nothing? You explain that she didn't respond when you greeted her, and she apologizes; she doesn't see much of anything else while she is researching flowers. This flower's leaves are shaped different, so she is interested in discovering the cause for this mutation.

  Licorice asks if there was something you wanted her to do. You explain that you were just trying to say "hi" to her because you had noticed she was there. Licorice likes your reason, and admits that she's bad with greetings. If it is okay with you, she has to go make a report about this plant mutation.

• Choice 2: Surprise her

  Result: -1000 FP with Licorice

  You run up and surprise her! After she settles down, she apologizes for not being aware that you were trying to greet her. Licorice then tells you that she's currently researching plants and to not disturb her.

Licorice is in the area again, but this time she appears to be talking to the plants. She becomes a little embarrassed when you notice what she's doing. Licorice explains that she's testing a theory that talking to plants will make them healthy.

• Choice 1: I doubt that

  Result: -1000 FP with Licorice

  She's disappointed. Licorice figures that you must think she's silly to talk to plants. She doesn't expect you to understand though, and so she walks away.

• Choice 2: I'll give it a try too

  Result: +2000 FP with Licorice

  You give it a go and try to have a conversation with the vegetation. Licorice can tell that the plants are a little bit better. Licorice theorizes that because farmers grow and interact with a lot of crops, they become very skilled with plants. She will need to do further research on this topic... the thought of such investigation makes her happy.

  Licorice is really glad that you didn't laugh at her when she told you about talking to plants, because she is someone who does it. When she would tell other people about it she would often get laughed at, so it wasn't possible for her to talk about it. When she saw you, she wanted to try the same thing with you, and she's really glad that she did.

  Licorice asks if you have some time, as she would like to validate her theory. It would be great if you could join her.

You go upstairs to Licorice's room to ask her out on a date. While sitting together on your date, Licorice admits that she is having a tough time trying to come up with topics to talk about.

• Choice 1: Talk to me about plants

  Result: +1000 FP with Licorice

  Licorice wonders if maybe you're getting tired of her talking about plants all the time. She'd rather talk about something else this time, and wants to hear more about you. Licorice asks what kinds of things do you like.

  • Choice A: I like farming

    Results: +500 FP with Licorice

    Well yes, she figured that much. You always look happy when Licorice watches you working on your farm. She mentions that you never complain about the work, and you look so cool while doing so. Licorice becomes embarrassed of her complements and requests that you pretend you didn't hear what she said, but it's too late for that! Licorice knows deep down that you really are a kind person.

    She tries to play cool, but it is difficult for her to be as open about her feelings as you are. Licorice becomes flustered with herself and creates an excuse to make her escape.

  • Choice B: I like you

    Result: +2000 FP with Licorice

    Licorice becomes incredibly embarrassed and doesn't like how you said that aloud for everyone else to hear. She accuses you of teasing her to watch her response, but admits that she does like you a lot too. You give her a smooch, which turns into another outburst of defensive emotions from Licorice.

  • Choice C: Let's not talk about that

    Result: -2000 FP with Licorice

    Licorice apologizes for bring up this topic, as she didn't mean to offend you. She decides to go ahead with talking about plants. After she is finished, she leaves, but wonders if it is really all right that she knows so little about you. She does want to know more about you.

• Choice 2: Let's use gestures instead!

  Result: -2000 FP with Licorice

  That's not what she meant! If you're going to make jokes, Licorice doesn't want to play along.

Licorice is checking out the plants in the area when she notices one of them looks to be unwell. She asks you to wait a moment while she tends to it. After she's finished, she is reminded of the last time you stopped to say "hi" while she was working with the plants. Licorice admits that she feels that she hasn't grown as a person; when she is around plants she gives them all her attention, and she feels that she may have neglected you.

• Choice 1: Do you like plants better?

  Result: -3000 FP with Licorice

  Licorice doesn't understand, since she considers you and the plants an important part of her life. If you really want to pressure her for an answer, then she'll admit that studying plants is something she could never give up! On the other hand, you are just as precious to her as her plant studies.

  Licorice admits that sometimes she takes advantage of your kindness to place priority on her plant studies, and how she isn't very good with expressing herself in words. You are a very important person to her, and there is no way she could choose one of you over the other. She asks that you have more patience with her.

• Choice 2: I don't mind at all.

  Result: +3000 FP with Licorice

  Licorice is glad how considerate you are. If you ever need her to say anything, she'll be glad to comply. You ask her how much does she like you, which flusters her since she isn't very good with words. After some verbal stumbling, Licorice tells you that she likes you as much as she likes plants. She's embarrassed, but she asks if you like her too. You confirm her question, which makes her more nervous. Licorice finally changes the subject and asks if you'd like to get a drink at the restaurant. She also courageously asks if the two of you could hold hands.
