Derek is a spunky, cheerful fellow who works part-time at Madeleine's cafe in the center of Zephyr Town. Full of energy, you'll typically see Derek outside or by the windmills, hunting for insects to share with Kevin. He's right at that point where he's ready to be an adult, but yet still wants to enjoy the carefree days of being a youth.

His older brother, Jules, has cared for Derek ever since their parents unfortunately passed away. Though Derek is ready to step out on his own, he feels that his brother still treats him as a child on occassion.

In the original Nintendo DS game, this character's English name was Dirk.

Derek greets you, and you chat for a moment before being interrupted by Kevin, who runs in asking to play. He tells Derek about a super cool prank he came up with to scare his mom by putting a bug on her back. Derek applauds him, but tells him it would be an even better prank if, instead, he showed his mom the bug in his hand.

Kevin runs off, excited. Derek tells you that while he finds Kevin amusing, he finds ways to help steer him toward slightly less harmful pranks by "speaking his language."

Option 1: He's quite the prankster, huh?

Right? That Kevin is a genuine prank genius!

Option 2: You shouldn't encourage pranks.

Hey, lighten up! Pulling pranks is part of being a kid.

Madeleine comes along and asks Derek to get back to work, so you both say goodbye.

1-Heart Unlock Request

Fragrance for the Cafe

Talk to Derek to learn about his task to acquire a new fragrance that would work well for the cafe. He knows nothing about this topic, but perhaps you do? Derek asks that you bring him 3 Herbal Perfume. You can make this using the red windmill on your farm by combining 2 herbs for each bottle. Bring the perfume back to Derek to receive 9 1-Star Wheat Seeds.

 

2-Heart Event

You and Derek strike up a conversation when Jules stops by. Derek is immediately suspicious of the purpose of his big brother's visit, which is then confirmed after Jules begins to pry as to whether Derek is overwhelmed with life. Naturally, Derek becomes peeved at his brother's intrusion. Jules backs off a bit, but then directs Derek to come right home after work as though Derek is a child with a nature to dilly-dally.

After Jules leaves, Derek apologizes for the scene. Jules has been driving him crazy lately!

Option 1: Show him you can handle yourself!

You're right. Derek can talk the talk, but he needs to walk the walk and show his brother that he deserves to be respected.

Option 2: Well, you can be a bit childish...

Oh that's harsh, but if that's your opinion, then maybe it's time for Derek to show Jules that he's a capable man.

Derek comes up with the idea to cook a meal. Usually, Jules doesn't permit Derek to cook because of self-perceived kitchen dangers. If he managed to cook a nice meal, maybe Jules would recognize that Derek isn't a kid anymore!

He has a chat with Madeleine about cooking lessons. The cafe owner is willing to teach Derek, but warns him that she runs a tight ship; he needs to handle anything she tosses at him. Derek thanks you for giving him a push towards his independence.

Chill-Out Juice!

Derek thanks you for helping him with Jules the other day. He's been practicing cooking, though he messes up a lot. Madeleine suggested he have some juice and take a break, but he doesn't have anything to drink. Derek asks that you bring him 5 Juice that are at least 1-Star quality. Tomato Juice is fine as long as you meet the minimum quality requirement.

In exchange, you'll receive the recipe for Oolong Tea.

 

4-Heart Event

You walk into the kitchen to find Derek busy with meal preparations. Jules then arrives and immediately becomes concerned that Derek is cooking. Should we do something?

Option 1: He'll be fine.

See? Even you think everything is cool. Derek tells his brother than he can handle being in the kitchen.

Option 2: I'm a little worried too...

Derek groans... not you too!

Derek is finished with cooking his meal and directs you and Jules to sit at the table. The meal looks safe to eat. Jules bites into the food, and it's actually incredible! Derek admits to Jules that he has been learning how to cook from Madeleine. Though the meal is delicious, Jules is a little sad. It looks like his little brother has grown up. Jules gets up from the table and apologizes to Derek for nagging him all the time. Derek replies that he's sorry for causing Jules to worry about him all the time.

They both turn to you and give their thanks again. You clearly have had a positive influence on Derek; besides, Derek talks about you all the time! Derek is instantly embarrassed, yet manages to thank you for stopping by to visit.

Metal Collectors Unite!

Derek is glad things have smoothed over between him and Jules. Now that he's less stressed about things, he started cleaning his room and discovered his old medal collection He would like to start collecting again! Derek would like you to fetch him 20 total medals. This can be any combination of Medal, Bronze Medal, Silver Medal, or Gold Medal.

Medals are little tokens you can randomly find when fishing or digging in dirt piles with your hoe. Sometimes they are on the ground behind peoples' houses. The Treasureland stall at the Rank 4 bazaar will trade 1 medal for 1 junk (bottles, boots, etc.). Bring Derek 20 medals to receive 10 3-Star Matcha Tea Can.

 

6-Heart Event

You bump into Derek in the plaza, where he asks if you have some free time to hang out together.

At his house, Derek has whipped up a fish-based recipe. It looks delicious! Derek explains that he wanted to try something new with this dish and asks for your opinion.

Option 1: It's great!

He's glad to hear you approve!

Option 2: It's... not bad.

Auu, Derek is slightly disappointed, but he's not deterred. He intends to keep practicing his cooking skills.

Derek wanted to thank you for before, and admits that he feels a little guilty for sending you home with nothing when you had his back with Jules. The only reason he can cook like this today is because of your encouragement. He wanted to show you how far he's come and thanks you for being there for him.

An after-meal walk through the mountain area is next. Derek seems nervous, but eventually he turns around and asks what you see him as.

Option 1: I've fallen in love with you.

He is super happy to hear that you have feelings for him. Though you have supported him a lot up until now, Derek wants to support you in return. While he still has a lot to learn about life, he asks that you have patience.

Option 2: You're a great friend.

Derek is super glad to have met you, as you're one of the best friends he has ever had.

It's up to you whether you want to be an official pair or just best buddies. There is no penalty for telling every marriage candidate that you love them; it merely changes the day-to-day dialog to feel more affectionate compared to being great friends. The candidate's character description in the Main Menu will note they are either "your newfound love" or "your trusted friend." You can continue to raise their affection to the maximum 10 hearts and propose marriage whether friends or lovers.

Derek wants to make a meal for someone to show his appreciation. He has a recipe, but he needs ingredients. Bring Derek 1 4-star ingredient, specifically Tofu, Green Onion, Fried Tofu, Potato, or Shimeji Mushroom. Tofu and Fried Tofu are Soybean-based cooked meals you need to have the recipes for in your kitchen, so it may be easier to Potato, Green onion, or Shimeji Mushroom up to 4-Star for this request. In return you'll receive the recipe for Boiled Tofu.

 

Marriage Proposal

Heck yeah, Derek will marry you! He wants to tell Jules first, though.

Jules is happy for his little brother. He's certain that you and Derek will take good care of each other. It's now Derek's turn to look after someone, much like how Jules took care of Derek. Jules reminds Derek that he'll always be his little brother, with Derek sameses back to Jules.

At the scenic overlook in the Mountains, Derek starts pondering how the household chores will be divided. He also wants to know what your favorite foods are! Derek apologizes for his excitement. There's no rush, since we have our whole lives together. Derek becomes excited again and yells out over the cliff how much he loves you.

The marriage proposal event will last all day, ending at 7:00 pm in front of your house.
