The Story of the Grand Bazaar
The Zephyr Town bazaar - a quiet outdoor market that has the potential to rekindle its grander days. Your acceptance of the town's call for help has brought you to this windy little place, where Mayor Felix awaits with all the enthusiasm he can muster for your arrival. He'll explain that the bazaar is just a shadow of what it used to be, but with your help, Felix hopes to reawaken the local economy.
If his over-the-top explanations are red-flag worthy, you can tell Felix that you are NOT the farmer he's been waiting for. Felix will then apologize for his exuberant introduction. Your character will walk back the way they came (i.e., the game's title screen), leaving Felix to wait for a new farmer who will never appear.
Rank 1 - Local Bazaar
In fact, your first day in Zephyr Town happens to be on the bazaar day! Felix will walk you through setting up your new farm stall, from setting out merchandise to making the all-important sale. Afterwards, the mayor will show you to the old farm - fixed up as much as the townsfolk could manage - leaving you with several days of tutorials and introductions.
You'll have more freedom on your second bazaar day. Besides yourself, there are four other stalls at the market:
To improve the Zephyr Town bazaar and earn the attention of the global Bazaar Review Board, the farmer protagonist must achieve a minimum total sales. For reaching Rank 2, your goal is a total of 1000 G. This should be pretty easy!
Rank 2 - Village Bazaar
The winds of change are blowing! The puny bazaar has now reached popularity Rank 2. The upgrade will surely get the attention of the Bazaar Review Board. In fact, word is that the BRB is sending an agent to help oversee the bazaar's development.
Soon you'll meet Diana, Harold, and some random guy who volunteered to carry their luggage since he was also heading to Zephyr Town. As a representative of the Bazaar Review Board, Diana notes that there is a high likelihood that the Zephyr Town bazaar will continue to expand. The BRB has opted to give its full support to the bazaar, though it can also withdraw support if the bazaar does not meet the board's expectations.
The sales goal to reach the next rank is 50,000 G and set up at least 2 new stalls. Three merchants want to move their business to Zephyr Town, plus the little Nature Sprites set up their own booth in the back corner. Help them by completing their requests:
Rank 3 - Town Bazaar
Things are coming along nicely! While Mayor Felix is happy with the new popularity level, Diana is not as impressed. Though it is evident that progress is being made. She reminds Felix that this is not the time to take it easy. Zephyr Town needs to put in more effort if they expect to have long-term support from the Bazaar Review Board.
After the bazaar review is over, Diana inquires about the decline of the bazaar. Her records indicate the Zephyr Town bazaar was a grand marketplace in the past. Felix nervously admits that they used to have a farmer who drew in large crowds. From her experience, Diana knows that a good, local farmer can indeed affect bazaar sales, but she has doubts that the loss of this single farmer had so much of a negative impact. She asks if Felix could tell her more about their former farmer. Before Mayor Felix could reluctantly discuss the past, Mina appeared to ask the mayor for assistance with a situation in town. The two of them run back to town, leaving you and Diana in the bazaar grounds.
Diana wonders if you also noticed the mayor acting strangely when she asked about the former farmer. There's definitely a bit of history that Mayor Felix isn't revealing. On the other hand, the more important matter is increasing the bazaar's rank. Diana will leave this former farmer issue alone for now.
To reach Rank 4, you need to earn 200,000 G. Four new merchants want to set up shop in Zephyr Town. This place is becoming popular!
Rank 4 - City Bazaar
It's one step closer to World Bazaar. Diana is pleased that the work is meeting the Bazaar Review Board's expectations and is impressed by the enthusiasm of the villagers. She also reminds Felix to be grateful for your contributions.
As Sonia and Stuart chat about how the bazaar hasn't been this busy since the last farmer left Zephyr Town. Diana takes the opportunity to ask them about the mysterious prior farmer. They explain the connection between the former farmer, who was also acting as mayor at the time, and the current mayor. Felix finally admits how the former farmer, upon learning that Felix intended to become the mayor, essentially abandoned the farm and her mayoral duties. Nobody knows where she went.
While Felix took on the role of mayor with success, his attempt to find a replacement local farmer always failed. Eventually, the bazaar lost so many customers that it became the po-dunk market that it was when you and Diana arrived. Felix laments the loss of the former farmer and mayor; it has been years, and no way to contact her. Diana notes that the best way to reach out to the former farmer is to make the Zephyr Town bazaar world-renowned again. If word spreads about the greatness of their bazaar, the former farmer is sure to hear about it.
To reach the next level, the sales goal is 500,000 G. There are four more stalls to set up:
Rank 5 - Regional Bazaar
Splended! World supremacy is just a stone's throw away! Even Diana feels that the current projectory could result in a world-renowned bazaar. They recognize that their improvements are generally due to your efforts to sell farm products. Before breaking for the day, Harold rushes over with a letter. Though Felix wants to open the message, Harold explains instructions left with the letter say it isn't to be opened until the Zephyr Town bazaar reaches National rank.
Turns out, the letter is from the former farmer! Though nothing is stopping Felix from opening the letter right now, he intends to follow the instructions and wait until the bazaar reaches the next rank.
To reach National Rank, you will need to earn 1 million G and have a total of 8 stalls (+4). You'll find three more merchants who want to open up stalls at the outdoor market:
Rank 6 - National Bazaar
We're so close! Our little bazaar is only one step away from global domination. As per the former farmer's instructions, Mayor Felix opens the letter to learn what excuse she had for ditching everyone. As expected, it's a typical, stand-on-your-own-feet type of shallow reason. In her letter, the former farmer apologizes for abandoning everyone without so much as a word but hopes to return someday when the town's bazaar becomes world famous once again.
For unknown reasons Felix is energized by the former farmer's letter (in which she calls him "worthless"...), though before he can say much more, he gives out a mighty sneeze. He must have caught a cold in all this excitement.
To reach the last global rank, the sales goal is 2 million G. There are two stalls left to unlock:
The next Saturday bazaar (if you continue the story), Mayor Felix's cold had developed into a bedridden sickness. Sophie meets with you in the morning to ask if you would help her run the bazaar that day. You meet up with Lloyd, June, and Gabriel, who have also volunteered to help in Felix's absence.
During this part of the story, you will not be running your bazaar booth.
Once night falls and the bazaar closes, everyone is exhausted. How does Felix do this every week all on his own? While Lloyd, June, and Gabriel tackle the after-bazaar cleanup duties, Sophie asks that you accompany her home to give the day's bazaar report to Felix.
Arata, Maple, and Samir happen to be there dropping off get-well gifts when Sophie gives her report. Felix is downtrodden because the former farmer managed the mayoral duties and the farm at the same time, and he's just lying around in bed doing neither. He really is "worthless." Samir gives Felix a pep-talk to encourage the mayor from feeling down about himself.
Freya then enters with a letter that recently arrived from the former farmer. She congratulates everyone for reaching the National rank and reveals that she is currently mentoring a bazaar in another town. Despite her intent to retire from bazaar-dom, her experience and expertise have pulled her back in. She has heard the news of the success of the Zephyr Town bazaar and is happy that Felix found a fantastic farmer and a great team to move forward with. The former farmer is satisfied that there is a new rivalry between her bazaar and Felix's, and challenges him to reach the World Bazaar rank.
Felix is energized to make it to the next bazaar rank before the former farmer can. Though maybe after he continues resting for a bit.
Rank 7 - World Bazaar
Huzzah! Your hard work has achieved the goal of the townsfolk: to have the greatest bazaar in the entire world! The next Saturday before the market opens, Mayor Felix will fetch you in the morning to attend a party at the bazaar grounds to celebrate the achievement. Everyone will be happy and hopeful, with the ending credits presented by Sherene, as she interviews the Zephyr Town residents on their great achievement.
A letter from the former farmer soon arrives. Despite the former farmer's intent to return, she's decided to not bother. Instead, she has determined to lead this other bazaar, challenging the Zephyr Town mayor. Mayor Felix is enthusiastic about the bazaar's future, but he can't become complacent. Zephyr Town's success inspired other regional bazaars, and there is concern that upstarts will quickly outpace the town's marketplace. Mayor Felix intends to improve the market and continue the momentum to become even greater.
After reaching the World Bazaar rank, you will no longer be prompted to visit the bazaar grounds on Sunday morning for Mayor Felix's post-bazaar summary.
Rank 8 and Beyond
The next day after the party, Mayor Felix will visit the farmhouse with a proposal. While Zephyr Town's bazaar is now world-renowned, it may be time to help promote other small, local bazaars. He tells you about the Zephyr Town Bazaar Support Fund, a donation-based effort to fund up-and-coming bazaars in other regions.
The funding for this initiative isn't based on weekly bazaar sales. Instead, it is a donation-based effort by the Bazaar Review Board. To pitch in financially, go to the bazaar information bulletin board next to the clock tower in the town plaza. You'll see the current rank title, the current rank number, and the amount of money the BRB wants to collect to achieve the next rank. The donation amount must be in full; you can't donate a little bit here and there until the goal has been met.
Donating to the cause will also increase the rank of Zephyr Town's bazaar. With each funding goal completion, the Grand Bazaar will rank up. The next morning, Mayor Felix will visit to thank you for the contribution and hand over a small reward.
