Grain Crops
Grain crops require you to accomplish certain tasks before the seeds are in Chen's shop inventory, with the exception of the fodder Grass. Rice, Wheat, Soybeans, and Buckwheat all take several seasons to mature, and the only way to harvest the crops is by cutting them with a Sickle that has a yellow Wonderful stone attached.
Rice can only be grown on Rice Island. To unlock Rice Island, raise Link Island by spending 3 Sun Stones. After that Rice Island will be available for 5 Sun Stones. Even if the islands are raised, you have to build two bridges to reach the rice paddy.
Wheat, Grass, Soybeans, and Buckwheat can all be grown in your crop field or inside of the Greenhouse.
When planting grain crops, keep in mind their long growth rates. For example, you do not want to plant Rice too close to the start of Summer, else the crop will not mature fast enough before Winter arrives. Wheat and Grass are the only grain crops that will go dormant during Winter and start growing again in the Spring.

Wheat does not wilt when Winter arrives. The crop will go dormant and will not grow until Spring season. You don't have to cut down your Wheat when the seasons change.
