Mining

The mine can be found off the curvy path about half way up the Mountain area. You can start to access it once you have Gannon build the bridge to the Forest area. The mine is 255 floors deep and there is only one of them in this game, unlike Harvest Moon DS with its 4 mines. Inside the mine you'll find jewels and ore hidden in the rocks, which you can unlock by using your hammer on the rocks. You can also find gold in the dirt if you till with your Hoe.

When you first enter the mine there won't appear to be anything inside. There is a patch of dirt in the middle of the room and a safe-area walkable border around the dirt. To descend into the mine you will have to dig for the staircase down to the next floor by using your Hoe, or you can run across the dirt until you discover a hole, which will drop you between 1 and 5 floors. There are no holes in the areas outside of the dirt-patch, so you can walk around the borders of mine floor without accidentally running across a hole.

Stamina is a big factor in how far down you go into the mine. Your normal 100 point STA bar will not save you if you fall down a 5-floor hole. The amount of damage you take per 5-floor fall is 100 points or more, and you'll pass out when you land.

To survive a deep fall, you will need to purchase the Goddess Brooches from Charlie's accessory shop. Just the basic red-colored brooch will increase your Stamina bar by 30, which should prevent you from passing out if you have full STA and fall 5 floors.

At the bottom of the mine you'll be congratulated by the Harvest Goddess. As a reward for reaching the bottom, she will give you either a Wonderful Stone or a cooking recipe, depending on how many times you have reached the 255th floor. If the number is odd (your 1st time, 3rd time, etc.) then you will be given a randomly-colored Wonderful. If the number is even (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) then you will get a cooking recipe that can not be learned from the Diner or Cafe. If you want all of the recipes available then you must travel down to the bottom of the mine 36 times! You will need to of met the Goddess first, so toss an item into her pond before heading to the mine for the first time (if you have not done so already). The Goddess' pond is in the Forest, next to the church. You can see it on your top-screen map.

The further down the mine you go, the better rank items you'll find. Getting high ranking ores is important for the Summer 15 Mining Festival. You will need to bring an item with at least 9 blue Quality marks in order to have a chance of winning.
