Tool Upgrades
Upgrading your basic tools is completely different in Island of Happiness compared to past Harvest Moon games. Your tool power now comes from attaching rocks, called Wonderful Stones, to the tool's available stone slots.
The seven colors of Wonderful Stones will increase the power of your tools in different ways. You can attach stones of the same color for a stronger affect, or even mix and match stones to create a tool with different benefits compared to the standard versions.

Stones can be acquired from winning festivals, Chen's shop in the Winter season, and at the bottom of the mine. To attach a stone to your tool, talk to Charlie when he is in Chen's shop and ask him about your tools. You can then select the tool to upgrade and then the stone(s) you want to attach.
The basic tools you start with (hammer, axe, hoe, sickle, and watering can) are only able to have 1 Wonderful Stone attached. If you want to attach more stones you will have to buy new tools from Gannon. Mirabelle sells the milker, sheers, and brush tools at her animal shop.

To increase its power, you will have to attach 1 Blue Wonderful (for +2 width range) and 2 Red Wonderfuls (for +1 and +1 length range). The details on the Watering Can will give you an area of 3x3.

My fishing pole!
I didn't give you my ol' fishing pole just so you can wish you had something better! My pole doesn't have any stone slots for Wonderfuls, so you best appreciate what you got for free!
Acquiring a specific color of Wonderful is not easy. Luckily there are some things you can do to increase your chances:
Points between: | Receive: |
---|---|
0 and 19 | Blue Wonderful |
20 and 39 | Green Wonderful |
40 and 54 | Red Wonderful |
55 and 70 | Yellow Wonderful |
71 and 82 | Orange Wonderful |
83 and 90 | Purple Wonderful |
91 to 99 | Indigo Wonderful |
If you're the grand prize winner in the animal judging, seasonal crop judging, cooking, fishing, or mining festivals, you will receive a Wonderful Stone. The type of Wonderful you receive will depend on the last 2 digits of your current Farm Degree.
Unfortunately you can't see your current degree point value, so make sure you save your game right before you participate in the festival. If you receive a stone color that you don't want, you can then adjust your degree points by reloading your game and using your tools, shipping items, or other tasks that increase you points.
The only mine in the game is up in the mountains and you can meet with the Harvest Goddess if you make it down to the last 255th floor. Each time you land on the bottom floor you will either receive a cooking recipe or a Wonderful Stone. If you land on an odd time (1st time, 3rd time, etc.) then you will be given a colored Wonderful Stone. An even time (2nd, 4th, etc.) will earn you a curry or natto cooking recipe.
You must unlock the Goddess before she will appear on the 255th floor! If you go down to the bottom without tossing a gift into the Goddess' Pond at least once, then you will receive nothing. Your rewards will also shift to stones on even times and recipes on odd times.
Harvest Moon farmer Katherine has noticed that there is a pattern to the type of Wonderful that the Goddess gives you for reaching the 255th floor; it is actually based on the last 2 digits of your current Farm Degree, just like with winning the yearly festivals. See the table above for the number ranges for each color.
If you are searching for a specific color of Wonderful, make your way down to the 254th floor (or somewhere close to) and then save your game. When you reach floor 255 you'll be given a stone by the Goddess. If the colored stone you receive is not what you want, reload your game and use your tools to increase your FD (1 tool use = 1 FD) until you get to the number range of the Wonderful you are looking for. Then just go back down to floor 255 to collect your stone.

During the Winter season, Chen will have Wonderfuls for sale in his shop. The chance of him having a stone for sale is dependent on the last digit of your Farm Degree ending in 5.
If you're trying to buy a specific color of stone, save your game the night before and then check Chen's store the next morning. If it doesn't appear then reload your game, use a tool 1 time, and then go to bed and check his inventory again. If still no stone, reload and use a tool 2 times. If there still isn't a stone then reload, use a tool 3 times, and go to bed. Basically you are nudging your Farm Degree up by 1 point the night before in order to get your last number to be a 5.
When the last number of your invisible degree meets the requirement then Chen will sell one stone. You can then repeat this process the next morning and all Winter long.
You can't buy the Winter 7 Indigo Wonderful in your first year of the game. Unfortunately, your first Wi7 lands on a Friday when Chen's shop is closed.
Don't forget, going to bed adds to your Farm Degree! When you go to bed you'll receve 1 degree multiplied by the number of years you currently are in the game. You may have to repeat nudging your FD many times in order to finaly achieve an ending number of 5.
