Pets and Wild Animals

In Harvest Moon: One World, pets can be added to your farm to bring in a bit of cozy charm. While they don't produce any goods to sell, they do have limited uses.

The Harvest Moon Festival that takes place on Fall 25 after you have rescued the Harvest Goddess. During this festival, your farming skills will be judged based on your chosen festival submissions: a crop, a flower, and an animal. This animal entry can be a farm animal or a pet. I've had a hard time winning this festival when using a livestock or chicken entry, but exotic pets seem to have enough oomph to win first place.

You will need to interact with all available pets in the game if you want to complete the Animals section of the game encyclopedia. Some pets are wild animals, and some are for sale in stores. You will have to buy ALL available store pets and interact with ALL wild animals to complete the Animals category.

Horses, camels, and reindeer are categorized as livestock in the shops.

Obtaining Pets

You can either A) buy pets or B) tame wild pets for free. For-sale pets can be bought in Calisson and Pastilla. While you can buy multiples of the same pet (e.g., you can own 3 grey-colored Border Collies), the wild animals are unique and will disappear from the wild after they have been tamed.

To tame a wild animal, walk up and interact with it. Petting the wild animal will increase its affection towards you. Once the wild animal has earned 5 music notes of affection, interacting with it will open an invitation to move the animal to your farm. Besides petting, you can feed the wild animal to raise their affection. The wild animals don't appear to have a preference for specific food that I could find.

Housing and Feeding Pets

The size of the pet determines where it will live on your farm. Small pets, such as cats, dogs, rabbits, and the Sun Parakeet, will live inside the farm house. Large pets - bears, tigers, and sasquatch - will take a space in the livestock barn.

Each time you upgrade your farmhouse, Doc Jr. will add a new indoor pet food bowl by the front door. You can have a maximum of 3 small pets living inside your house.

The number of large pets you can own is limited to the amount of livestock space you have in your barn. The first level barn can hold up to 4 livestock animals, the level 2 barn holds 8, and the level 3 barn holds 12. The large pets only fit in the livestock half of the barn; the poultry side will only be available for chickens.

Pets will eat the same Animal Feed as the livestock and poultry. Because they don't produce any goods, don't bother feeding them Gentle Feed or Fast Animal Product Feed. Keep those high-level feeds reserved for your useful animals. Each pet will eat 1 bag of food per day.

Removing Pets

To get rid of a pet you don't want anymore, open the Doc Pad and navigate to the Making Friends tab. Open that section and then switch to the Animals group. Select the pet you don't want anymore, and then choose the Let Go button at the bottom of the animal's profile page. There is no way to sell unwanted pets! You have to set them free.

Wild animals will return to their original locations, with their affection level reset to zero.

Pets can die of old age. When a wild pet dies, it seems to take a few in-game weeks before it reappears back in its original location, but maybe I had some bad luck.

Pet Locations

Below is the list of available pets, sorted by their entry in the Animal encyclopedia. Sometimes a wild animal will not appear at their location in the overworld as part of the (unnecessary) randomness of the game. Simply try again another day to see if the animal appears.
