Animal Friendship

screen shot

Just like with the villagers, your animals have a friendship towards you. You can see your animal friendship levels by going inside one of the barns and selecting the book in the lower-left corner. This book will tell you the number of hearts each animal has (maximum of 10), its age, health, and pregnancy status. The animal stats ledger does not display your friendship levels with the wild animals that live in the mountain areas.

The only animal that doesn't have friendship is the horse. Because you can rent a new horse from Kana or Grady at any time, friendship with the horse is impossible to do.

The maximum amount of friendship you can have with each animal is 10 hearts or 1000 FP. Each heart listed under the animal's name inside the animal book represents 99 points: zero hearts is between 0 and 99 FP, 1 heart is 100 to 199, 2 hearts is 200 to 299, and so on. The more friendship you have with your livestock and chickens, the higher the star rank of their produced goods will be. With your dogs and cats, a higher friendship means they can herd more animals in and out of the barns.

The friendship points with your animals will increase or decrease depending on your interactions with them. Ideally, you do not want to decrease your friendship points with the animals! Every day, make sure to take care of your animals to increase their friendship. Sheep seem to increase their friendship the fastest and chickens are the hardest to increase FP with.

Actions that increase friendship points will work once per day. The only exception is when the animals are outside on sunny or snowy days, where the weather will increase their FP for every 2 hours they are outside.

Animal Stress and Sickness

The blue bar next to an animals' friendship hearts is its stress meter. The more stressed it is, the greater the chance that the animal will become sick. The stress bar is rated from 0 stress points (SP) to 100 stress points, with 0 being very good and 100 being very, very bad. An animal has a chance of becoming sick once it has accumulated 50 stress points; the more stress an animal has, the greater the chance of it becoming sick in the morning. Animals that become sick in the morning instantly jump to having 100 SP.

A sick animal will need to be cured by using Animal Medicine (500 G) that is sold at Cheryl's shop in Bluebell Town. An animal will not become healthy on its own without medicine. Leaving an animal sick for a certain number of days will guarantee an early death:

  • Silkie Chicken = 3 days
  • Chicken = 4 days
  • Alpaca, Suffolk Sheep = 5 days
  • Sheep = 6 days
  • Jersey Cow = 7 days
  • Cow = 8 days

For example, if your Silkie Chicken is sick, it will die on the 4th day of its illness if you don't use Animal Medicine on it within 3 days of it becoming sick. The stress points reset to 0 after using Animal Medicine, though it can only be used when the animal is actually sick.

Some activities will add to the animal stress bars, and some activities will reduce the stress bars.

If you leave your chickens outside overnight and the next day is a storm, they will be blown away for the day. You'll earn the initial +30 SP for being impacted by a morning storm, but you won't receive the +SP for every 2 hours they remain outside because there's no way for you to bring them back inside that day.

3DS Animal Petting Mini Game

In the 3DS version of the game, a petting mini game using the lower touch screen of the 3DS console will help increase friendship even faster than in the DS version. The prompt to trigger the mini game may appear after you talk to the animal for the day; a hand icon will appear above the animal's head if it can be rubbed. When you see the gloved hand icon appear, press the A button while standing next to the animal to start the mini game. The gloved hand icon won't appear if the animal is sick or if it is dirty and needs a brushing. The icon will also disappear if you don't press A fast enough to start the mini game, as it only appears once per day per animal.

The bottom touch screen will display the amount of time you have to pet the animal (10 seconds), a rub progress bar, the silhouette of the animal to rub on, and the current heart level of the animal. When prompted to start the mini game, rub your finger or stylus across the animal's silhouette to increase the rub progress bar. The more friendship hearts the animal has, the easier it seems to completely fill in the rub progress bar.

After 10 seconds is up, the animal will react to your efforts on the top screen of the 3DS. You might see nothing (really low rub bar progress), music notes, hearts, or hearts plus sparkles. The sparkle reaction happens when you fill at least 90% of the rub bar and can reward you with +10 FP and -10 Stress. Anything less than 90% will award you with less FP and stress recovery.

Earning a bonus of +10 FP per day per animal is a great benefit in the 3DS version!
