Your Child
Like in other versions of Harvest Moon, A New Beginning allows you to have a virtual offspring to live on your farm. You can have one child in the game, and he or she won't help you with any of the farmwork.
Before you can have a child, you need to get married! A single parent doesn't exist in the Harvest Moon universe.
One week after your wedding ceremony, Rebecca will have the Child Bed blueprint for sale in her shop. The blueprint costs 3200 G. To construct the Child Bed, you will need to combine 10 Black Lumber, 5 Suffolk Wool, 10 Alpaca Wool, and 1 Pink Diamond. Your Double Bed will be moved closer to the clothing closet to make room for the Child Bed in the corner of your farmhouse. The flower Vase will move from near your kitchen to between the two beds. Also, a third chair will be added to your dining room table.
After you have the Child Bed built, the next thing you need to do is wait. The pregnancy event will trigger 30 days after your wedding ceremony. A season is actually 31 days, but the pregnancy triggers at 30 days. In the morning when you wake up, you and your spouse will go to Klaus' clinic to discover the reason for an uncomfortable sickness. The doctor will announce the pregnancy, and the two of you will then return home to play through the rest of the day. Pregnancy can trigger on festival days.
If you don't have the Child Bed, then the pregnancy event will be postponed beyond 30 days until you have the baby's bed built.
Even if your character is the one that is pregnant, you still have to take care of the farm. You won't lose extra stamina because of your condition; the game plays as normal.
The pregnancy will be 60 days, which is two days short of two seasons. In the morning you will be transported to Klaus' clinic, where you'll learn the baby's gender and then choose its name. Your spouse will not offer to name the baby like in Tale of Two Towns, so it is up to you to pick a good name. The baby will always appear wrapped in a blue blanket whether it is a girl or a boy.
If you are trying to get a specific gender, you will want to save your game the day before the birth is to take place. The birth date does not appear on your farmhouse calendar, so you will simply need to remember the day you saw the pregnancy event and then count 60 days. For example:
- Married on Winter 15
- Built the Child Bed after buying the blueprint from Rebecca (Winter 22)
- Pregnancy event occurs on Spring 14 (30 days after wedding)
- Save game on Fall 11
- Child is born on Fall 12 (60 days after pregnancy event)
- If not the gender you want, reload the save game back to Fall 11 and go to bed to witness the birth event again. Repeat until you get your desired gender.
The only thing that you can experience that day is the birth of the child. Once the birth event is over, you will go to bed for the day. The next morning, the baby will be in its bed. You can't pick it up or give it gifts.
The baby will remain motionless in its bed for 62 days. After two seasons, in the morning when you wake up the baby will be crawling on the floor. It is just the event though, as the baby will appear back in the bed and remain there after the cut-scene is over. You can now talk to it, but you can't give it any gifts.
After another 62 days have passed, the bed-baby will develop into a child (1 year since birth). At this point you can begin to give it gifts. The girl and boy like the same gifts. The child will appear at festivals (such as the Fall 31 Pumpkin Festival) and you can see a random event when the child has at least 20,000 FP.

Becoming a Temporary Teenager
After your baby has reached the child level and has 60,000 FP or more, the Harvest Goddess will visit your house and take you to her spring, where she'll give your child a piece of grow-up Candy. This special treat will transform your child into a teenager for 30 days (not a full 31-day season). There is another random event that you can trigger when your baby is a teenager, but it requires you to have seen the random event from when it was a child.
When the grow-up Candy wears off, the little one will return to its cute child stage. If you want another piece of Candy, give Alice the Harvest Sprite some Royal Jelly. You can get Royal Jelly from your production honey bees. If you seed a bee hive with a Mountain Honey Bee from the Ancient Ruins, then you'll get the honey you need for more Candy.
A teenager's schedule is a little different than the child's. The teenager won't go to bed until midnight, and its Random B locations are the farmhouse and the mine, instead of the farmhouse and the mountain.
Even as a teenager, the child won't help you with any farm chores. Just like with your spouse though, you can ask it to forage for wild items on Fridays or Saturdays, but only if they have 30,000 FP or more and the weather is sunny. Once the teen converts back to a child, it won't help with foraging unless you feed it Candy to return it to teen-dom.
